Kmart Finds
Here are two great Kmart sets that adapt well to fit Process Outcome One for Computational Thinking. It is basically a tangible copy of Exemplar One: Collecting Pollen.
The Kmart hamburger set ($8) is a build your own wooden hamburger, found in the pretend play section. The wooden pancake set ($5) is also in the same section.
I made a grid using a large piece of felt ($5 per metre at an emporium) and drew a grid on it using permanent marker. I used felt so that I didn't need to hem it. This felt grid is going to come up often in future posts, I love using it and have developed a range of scenarios to use with it.
Take apart the hamburger and lay the pieces out around the grid. Students need to write a series of instructions to move around the grid and collect each piece for their hamburger. Two methods of recording:
* arrows work well for the younger coder
* U (up), D (down), L (left), R (right) for slightly more capable coder.
I made some arrow cards to support forming a set of instructions. I photocopied it four times, laminated and cut out the cards. Students can lay out the cards, get a buddy to check, and go back to debug the instructions before recording them.
